Hare Krishna guys. What is the Rig Veda? As we know the oldest Hindu book is RIG VEDA which is written in Ancient Sanskrit language. If we translate meaning of Rig Veda it will be “The Knowledge of Verses“. Rig Veda consist of hymns to pray various gods, it has total 10 mandalas and 1028 hymns. I will provide all of Rig Veda Hymns in simple and understandable english translation to all of you one by one. These translation will be just for understanding it will not be a word to word translation. In this article we will learn about the Second Sukta or Hymn of First Mandala. So let start by saying ” Jay Shree Krishna”

The author is Rishi Madhuchhandas, son of Vishwamitra, The metre of these Hymns is Gayatri. There are total 9 hymns 3 of them are dedicated to Vayu(the air), 3 of them addressed to Indra and Vayu jointly, and last 3 are addressed to Mitra and Varuna.
वायवा याहि दर्शतेमे सोमा अरंक्र्ताः |
तेषां पाहि शरुधी हवम ||
vāyavā yāhi darśateme somā araṃkṛtāḥ |
teṣāṃ pāhi śrudhī havam ||
Hey Vayu, pleasant to behold, hear our pray and invitation
These drinkables (Somaraas) are prepared for you only, come and drink them.
वाय उक्थेभिर्जरन्ते तवामछा जरितारः |
सुतसोमा अहर्विदः ||
vāya ukthebhirjarante tvāmachā jaritāraḥ |
sutasomā aharvidaḥ ||
Hey vayu, The worshipers worship you with holy prayers,
Having poured out the Soma Juice, knowing the suitable season.
वायो तव परप्र्ञ्चती धेना जिगाति दाशुषे |
उरूची सोमपीतये ||
vāyo tava prapṛñcatī dhenā jighāti dāśuṣe |
urūcī somapītaye ||
Hey Vayu, Your approval (blessings) comes to the worshipers who prepare the soma juice for you and to many other who worship you to drink the soma juice
इन्द्रवायू इमे सुता उप परयोभिरा गतम |
इन्दवो वामुशन्ति हि ||
indravāyū ime sutā upa prayobhirā ghatam |
indavo vāmuśanti hi ||
Hey Indra and Vayu, come together the Soma juice are being prepared for you both,
Come and bless us with food, every drop of the soma juice awaits for you both.
वायविन्द्रश्च चेतथः सुतानां वाजिनीवसू |
तावा यातमुप दरवत ||
vāyavindraśca cetathaḥ sutānāṃ vājinīvasū |
tāvā yātamupa dravat ||
Hey Indra and Vayu, Please abiding in this sacrificial rite,
You know that the soma juice is ready, so come quickly
वायविन्द्रश्च सुन्वत आ यातमुप निष्क्र्तम |
मक्ष्वित्था धिया नरा ||
vāyavindraśca sunvata ā yātamupa niṣkṛtam |
makṣvitthā dhiyā narā ||
Hey Vayu and Indra, come to have the Soma juice which the worshipers have prepared for you
Come to this sacrificial rite and it will be completed with your arrival.
मित्रं हुवे पूतदक्षं वरुणं च रिशादसम |
धियं घर्ताचीं साधन्ता ||mitraṃ huve pūtadakṣaṃ varuṇaṃ ca riśādasam |
dhiyaṃ ghṛtācīṃ sādhantā ||
I glory Mitra, the pure vigour and Varuna The destroyer of foes,
They bring water to earth.
रतेन मित्रावरुणाव रताव्र्धाव रतस्प्र्शा |
करतुं बर्हन्तमाशाथे ||
ṛtena mitrāvaruṇāv ṛtāvṛdhāv ṛtaspṛśā |
kratuṃ bṛhantamāśāthe ||
Hey Mitra and Varuna, Augmenters of water and dispenser of water
You make this sacrificial rite successful and bring the true rewards.
कवी नो मित्रावरुणा तुविजाता उरुक्षया |
दक्षं दधाते अपसम ||
kavī no mitrāvaruṇā tuvijātā urukṣayā |
dakṣaṃ dadhāte apasam ||
Hey Mitra and Varuna, prosper our sacrifice (hardwork) and strength
Many are benefited with your blessing, have given refuge to many.
Conclusion:
In this sukta the the hymns shows how we should pray to Indra, Vayu, Mitra and Varuna. What are arrangement we should make to make them happy. In my opinion this sukta gives a brief idea of how our ancestors use to call and welcome the rainy season. All the element of the nature which makes our life better are just like blessings from the respective gods therefore we should pray to them and do sacrificial rites to please them.
